WALT: Use partitioning strategies to solve  division problems.

1) Fill in the gaps below.....

a) 132 divided by 4 = 33

120 - 12

b) 161 divided by 7 = 24

g) Why is 128 divided by 4 the same as 120 divided by 4 plus 8 divided by 4? Because you’re just splitting the numbers up to make it easier and if you split the numbers up and divide it by the number it’s suppose to be divided by then it will equal the same.

3) Word problems.....

a) A medical company has made 832 band aids which it must be pack equally into 8 boxes. How many band aids must they put in each box? 832 divided by 8 = 104

b) A furniture company has made 312 desks which are to be delivered to 3 schools. How many desks does every school get if they all get the same number of desks? 312 divided by 3 = 104

c) A department store sold 115 shirts in one week (Monday to Friday). If they sold the same amount of shirts everyday how many shirts did they sell on one of the days? 115 divided by 5 = 23

d) A birthday shop has used 93 candles on 3 cakes. The three people are all the same age. How old must every person be? 93 divided by 3 = 31

e) A machine sorts 464 jelly beans evenly into 4 large containers. How many jelly beans must be placed in every container? 464 divided by 4 = 116

f) A supermarket is giving away 4 bananas to every person who takes part in local the marathon. They gave away 220 bananas in total. How many people have entered the race? 220 divided by 4 = 55

g) A bakery has made 72 cupcakes. It they sell them in packs of 3 how many packs do they have to sell? 72 divided by 3 = 24

h) A florist has 189 flowers. If they put 7 flowers in every bouquet how many bouquets can they make? 189 divided by 7 = 27

i) A car park can hold 132 cars. There are 3 levels in the car park and they all hold the same amount of cars. How many cars must fit on every level? 132 divided by 3 = 44
